Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat will you ask me during the interviews? Depending on which book package you choose, we may be discussing your entire life story or focusing on one segment of your life. You may wish to reflect on any topics you want to cover. However, it's not necessary to have anything prepared in advance. The interviews will be conversational, and rough edges can be smoothed out during the editing process. Be assured you will never be pressured to discuss anything that is uncomfortable for you. |
What if I change my mind about something I talked about during the interviews?
You will have the opportunity to review drafts of the project before it is published. You have complete control over what ends up in the final product and can make revisions or deletions as you see fit.
How long will it take to complete my book?
The timeline for your project will vary based upon a number of factors, most notably the amount of interview hours you choose. Most projects can be finished within six months of completing interviews and receiving all of your photographs. If you need to meet a specific date, please let me know.
I am part of a group that would like to learn more about personal histories. Is there someone who could come speak to our group?
Yes! I love to talk to people about the importance of personal history writing. Whether they utilize my services or write them on their own, I want to encourage people to capture their life stories. Contact us to schedule a time when I can present to your group.
How long will my book be?
The length of your book will vary based on how much material is gathered during the interviews. The smallest book package will produce a memoir that is approximately 40 pages. A legacy book that tells an entire life story can reach 150 pages or more, depending on how many interview hours you choose.
I don't remember much about my childhood. Is that a problem?
Not at all. We can focus on other parts of your life story. However, you may be surprised by how memories return to you once you begin the interview process and begin telling your story.
I'd love to do a project, but my family member lives in another city. Can you still help us?
Absolutely. I am based in Wichita, Kansas, and travel regionally with mileage/travel charged at competitive rates. We can also complete interviews by phone or video call, if necessary.
I've already begun writing my memoirs. Can you use what I have written?
Yes, I will combine your work with information gathered during the interviews and will edit it so the two will flow together smoothly.
Do you do genealogical research?
While personal history and genealogy are related fields, they are actually quite different. Genealogy is about tracing family history through ancestors—-researching records and lineage. Personal history writing preserves the stories behind those people.
I'd like to sell my book after it is complete. Is that something you can help me with?
My focus is helping preserve life stories for family, friends, and future generations. While your completed hardcover book will be professionally formatted and printed, I do not offer self-publishing assistance. However, you will own the copyright of your book and are free to pursue self-publishing after your book is complete.
